We help with all different types of home moves, and the requirements and recommendations for each move depend on the size, location, layout, and structure of the house.

Detached/ Semi-Detached/ Bungalow/ Houses

For larger moves, we recommend using bigger trucks. If you need extra space, a small truck can be added to provide additional cubic feet. Our trucks are easy to park, and you have the flexibility to choose as many movers as you need. This allows you to balance the time and cost of your move effectively. Based on our extensive experience, we are happy to provide you with a professional recommendation to ensure a smooth and efficient move.

Townhouse/ Row house/ Townhome

Moving in a townhouse can be challenging due to limited space for maneuvering larger items. This is especially true for three-storey townhouses, which often require navigating extra flights of stairs and necessitate more than two movers. We recommend using a medium-sized truck due to the difficulty of parking a large truck on the driveway. Based on your home’s structural layout, square footage, and the number of stairs, we will provide you with the optimal number of professionals and trucks needed for a smooth and efficient move.

Basement-houses

Basement homes can be either walkout or have a staircase leading to the main entrance. This structural difference significantly impacts the moving effort. To facilitate the move, pack all loose items in relatively larger boxes, making it easier to lift them into the truck. Since the truck will likely be parked a slight distance from the house, this approach ensures a smoother and more efficient moving process. Trust TouchWood Movers to handle your basement home move with expertise and care.

Key things to consider before relocating:

Eight Weeks Before Moving Day:

1. Start Looking for a Moving Company

Begin by researching various moving companies in your area. Look for companies with good reviews, reasonable rates, and strong reputations. Compare the services offered by different companies. Consider factors like insurance coverage, packing services, and the availability of storage solutions. Read online reviews and ask for references from each company to ensure they have a history of satisfied customers.

2. Plan Which Items to Donate or Sell

Take an inventory of all your possessions. Decide which items you want to keep, donate, or sell. Contact local charities and non-profit organizations to arrange for donation pickups or drop-offs. Organizations like Furniture Bank and Habitat for Humanity GTA are great options. List items you want to sell on platforms like Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace, or Craigslist.

Four Weeks Before Moving Day:

1. Mail Forwarding

Visit the Canada Post website or your local post office to set up mail forwarding. This service will redirect your mail to your new address for a specified period.

2. Utility Providers

Contact your utility providers (electricity, water, gas, internet, and cable) to schedule the transfer of services to your new home.

3. Measure Spaces

Measure the rooms in your new home to ensure the furniture you plan to buy will fit. This is especially important for large items like sofas, beds, and dining tables.

One Week Before Moving Day:

 1. Finish Packing and Label Items

Pack essential items that you use daily, such as toiletries, kitchenware, and a few sets of clothes, in a separate box. Label this box clearly and keep it easily accessible. Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to in your new home. Use color-coded labels or markers for easy identification. For example, use blue for the kitchen, red for the bedroom, etc.

2. Apply for a Change of Address

Visit your local post office or go online to the Canada Post website to submit an official change of address form. This will ensure that your mail is forwarded to your new address.

3. Transfer Utility Services

Contact your utility providers (electricity, water, gas, internet, cable, and waste management) to inform them of your move. Schedule disconnection at your current home and reconnection at your new address.

Moving Day:

1. Be Available for Our Movers

  • Be Ready Early: Ensure you're awake and prepared before the movers arrive.
  • Point of Contact: Designate someone to be available throughout the day to answer any questions from the movers.

2. Provide Special Instructions for Your Belongings

  • Communicate Fragility: Clearly indicate which items are fragile and require special handling.
  • Special Instructions: Provide specific instructions for delicate antiques, heavy furniture, valuable electronics, and any unique items needing extra attention or special transport methods.

3. Start Your New Life with Best Wishes from TouchWood Movers

  • Unpack Essentials First: Begin by setting up your bed, kitchen, and essential furniture to make your new house feel like home.
