We help all different types of home moving and the requirements and recommendations around moving each house depends on the size, location, layout and structure of the house. Some general guidelines are:

Detached/ Semi-Detached/ Bungalow/ Houses

It is recommended to use bigger trucks for this type of move. A small truck can also be added to a bigger truck for extra cubic feet of moving space. The trucks are also easier to park and you will have the option to choose as many movers as you need. This flexibility allows you to balance the time needed for moving as well as cost. We will of course be happy to give you our professional recommendation based on our experience!

Townhouse/ Row house/ Townhome

Moving in a townhouse is a tricky task. With reduced area to maneuver bigger items, it is always advisable to move with care. Some of the townhouses are even 3-storeys or more, which means extra flights of stairs which definitely warrants more than 2 movers on a single moving job. It is difficult to park truck on the driveway so a medium sized truck is recommended. As always, based on the structural layout of your house, the square footage and the number of flights of stairs, we can share with you the optimum number of professionals and trucks required

Basement-houses

A basement-home can be walkout or with a staircase leading to the main entrance of the house. It sounds like a small structural difference but has quite an impact on the efforts needed for the move. It is advisable to pack all the loose items in relatively bigger boxes so it is easy lifting them into the truck since the truck will most likely be parked a slight distance away from the house

Key things to consider before relocating:

    Eight Weeks Before Moving Day:

    1. Start Looking for a Moving Company

Begin by researching various home moving company options in your area. Look for a moving company with good reviews, reasonable rates, and a strong reputation. Compare the services offered by different companies, considering factors like insurance coverage, packing services, and the availability of storage solutions. Read online reviews and ask for references from each moving company to ensure they have a history of satisfied customers.

    2. Plan Which Items to Donate or Sell

Take an inventory of all your possessions. Decide which items you want to keep, donate, or sell. Contact local charities and non-profit organizations to arrange for donation pickups or drop-offs. Organizations like Furniture Bank and Habitat for Humanity GTA are great options. List items you want to sell on platforms like Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace, or Craigslist.

    Four Weeks Before Moving Day:

    1. Mail Forwarding

Visit the Canada Post website or your local post office to set up mail forwarding. This service will redirect your mail to your new address for a specified period.

    2. Utility Providers

Contact your utility providers (electricity, water, gas, internet, and cable) to schedule the transfer of services to your new home.

    3. Measure Spaces

Measure the rooms in your new home to ensure the furniture you plan to buy will fit. This is especially important for large items like sofas, beds, and dining tables.

    One Week Before Moving Day:

     1. Finish Packing and Label Items

Pack essential items that you use daily, such as toiletries, kitchenware, and a few sets of clothes, in a separate box. Label this box clearly and keep it easily accessible. Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to in your new home. Use color-coded labels or markers for easy identification. For example, use blue for the kitchen, red for the bedroom, etc. This will make your home moving process much smoother and more organized.

    2. Apply for a Change of Address

Visit your local post office or go online to the Canada Post website to submit an official change of address form. This will ensure that your mail is forwarded to your new address.

    3. Transfer Utility Services

Contact your utility providers (electricity, water, gas, internet, cable, and waste management) to inform them of your move. Schedule disconnection at your current home and reconnection at your new address.

    Moving Day:

    1. Be Available for Our Movers

    • Be Ready Early: Ensure you're awake and prepared before the movers arrive.
    • Point of Contact: Designate someone to be available throughout the day to answer any questions from the movers.

    2. Provide Special Instructions for Your Belongings

    • Communicate Fragility: Clearly indicate which items are fragile and require special handling.
    • Special Instructions: Provide specific instructions for delicate antiques, heavy furniture, valuable electronics, and any unique items needing extra attention or special transport methods.

    3. Start Your New Life with Best Wishes from TouchWood Movers
